United for Rabies-Free MIMAROPA

April 10, 2019, Occidental Mindoro - This week, government workers from the Provincial Veterinary Offices of Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, City Veterinary Office of Puerto Princesa, Palawan, Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office 4B, and Bureau of Animal Industry launch various activities to produce the first region to be declared as rabies-free by year 2020. The team rotates schedules to cover the entire MIMAROPA with its first leg in the Province of Romblon followed by Oriental Mindoro. This week is their third leg scheduled in Occidental Mindoro, followed by Puerto Princesa City and Palawan by June, then Marinduque by July. This activity adopts the Filipino concept of Bayanihan (Cooperative Endeavor) with one week of intensive mass dog vaccination and spaying/castration by the MIMAROPA team, and then sustained by the participating local government unit within a month’s time. MIMAROPA veterinarians claim, “Sa MIMAROPA, ang pagsugpo sa rabies ay sama-sama hindi kanya-kanya” (In MIMAROPA, rabies eradication is not a segregated approach but a collective one). “ ### (Dr. Joy Lagayan)
